How to drill a hole in a door?

I try to drill a hole on a door for a door lock. I bought a hole saw from Bunnings. When I drilled, the pilot drill bit was rotating which is good. But the cylindrical blade ate into the wood and refused to rotate. Basically the blade stopped while the drill bit was still running.

Re: Try ro drill a hole on a door. Hole saw problem.

Hello @Makita

Thank you for sharing your question about your hole saw.

That is quite a mystery why the hole saw would stop spinning but the center part still rotates. Would it be possible for you to post a photo of hole saw that you used without the center part installed? We need to see if the center hole of the hole saw has been damaged in any way.

Generally, I would suggest double checking that the drill bit is secure and the grub screw holding it firmly in place. In correct installation will sometimes allow the bit to spin in place. It's important that the drill bit be fixed by the grub screw firmly on the flat section of the bit.

In regards to the hole saw itself; I suggest using a shifter to screw the nut securely making sure that the holes saw is firmly anchored to the center part. Once everything has been double checked, I suggest giving it another go. If the unit still fails to perform, I suggest bringing the hole saw back to the store you purchased it from and speaking to the tool specialist.

Tell them what's been happening, and the tool specialist will diagnose your hole saw kit and determine if there is something at fault.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

Eric

Re: Try ro drill a hole on a door. Hole saw problem.

d1.jpgd2.jpgd3.jpgd4.jpgd5.jpgd6.jpgd99.jpg I visited my local Bunnings. The Bunnings specialist said the problem is with my drill. He suggested I should get a 18V Hammer Drill which is more powerful than my current drill. It is because this Hammer Drill has the hammer function. I bought the Hammer Drill and tried again. I encountered the exact same issue. I even tried the different settings or the numbers on the Hammer Drill but only the middle drill bit was running and the outside part struck on the wood. Please see the attached photos. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Try ro drill a hole on a door. Hole saw problem.

Good morning @Makita

I'm wondering if the grub screw is not centered or tight enough on the flat section? If it isn't, the drill bit would spin - but not the holesaw.

Just a thought.

Cheers.

Re: Try ro drill a hole on a door. Hole saw problem.

Hi @Makita,

As @Noyade mentioned, the only possible explanation I can think of is that the grubscrew is not fixed tightly enough against the shank of the drill bit. There's typically a flat portion that he's identified that the grubscrew lines up with.

Try positioning the grub screw over the flat section and tightening it with an allen key.

Please let us know how you go.
