Hi, I'm trying to add a shower to the existing laundry/toilet. The shower base have to be approx 100mm higher than the other floor for the 50mm waste pipe to run under it.
Just wondering that what's the best way to prepare a 100mm high shower base? Is it better to make a 100mm high timber frame and full it up with mortar or is there any other better way?
Also another question I have is that is it compulsory to have a floor waste in a bathroom in QLD? The shower will be enclosed shower, the toilet and vanity both will have overflow points in them, so the chances of any flooding are extremely low.
Thanks
Hi @pash81,
Consulting a professional familiar with the National Construction Code (NCC) and local regulations is the first step, especially regarding whether a floor waste is required in your situation. In Queensland, a floor waste might not always be compulsory in a bathroom in a class 1 dwelling, but specific requirements depend on factors like the layout and whether it’s considered a wet area. It’s essential to check with a plumber or a builder familiar with Queensland's regulations to get an accurate answer.
Regarding your shower base, one option is indeed to create a 100mm high timber frame filled with mortar. This is a common approach, but make sure the structure is solid and that the waterproofing is thoroughly applied, especially around the timber. You’ll want to ensure that the waterproofing extends well up the walls and meets the NCC standards for wet areas.
Alternatively, pre-formed shower bases are an excellent option if you want to avoid building a frame from scratch. These can be installed on a raised platform or concrete, providing a stable and water-resistant solution. Slimline shower waste options are available, and they might allow you to avoid raising the floor too much, potentially reducing the need for a 100mm height.
Lastly, cutting into the floor to run pipes is another possibility if the structure allows it, though I understand from your question that this might be tricky. If it’s an older building or concrete slab, this could be more challenging and costly, so weigh the pros and cons of each approach with a professional before making a final decision.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Mitchell, thanks for the reply. I have contacted 4 different plumbers. Two said a floor waste is required and two said no need of a floor waste as long as the shower is enclosed and other fixtures like toilet, vanity have overflow vents built in.
That's why I'm confused and not sure whom to believe.
Regarding the shower base, the area I have is not standard. So will need to make a base.
Hello @pash81
If two of the plumbers you've spoken to has said that you need a waste installed, odds are it is required. As Mitchell has mentioned it's best to inquire at your local council regarding the rules and regulations of installing a new shower in your home. I propose engaging the services of a plumber who has experience in installing new showers into existing homes. They would be more familiar with rules regarding waste placement and installation. Plus, you'll see it when they draw up their plans and submit it to the council.
I recommend asking for an official itemized quote from the plumbers you've spoken to so that its clear whether they will be installing a waste or not.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

If I run a 50mm pvc shower waste pipe on top of the current tiles, what's the minimum thickness of mortar/screed which has to go on top of this pipe?
Amy example of a slimline shower waste?
Hi @pash81,
Unfortunately, this is a question for a plumber.
They will likely have to physically come and see what you are trying to achieve to answer your questions properly.
Let me know if there is anything else I can assist with.
