How do i waterproof a polished concrete and brick wall laundry?

I’m renovating my garage laundry. There’s will be a laundry sink, toilet and a shower that is an all-in-one module so it comes with its own waterproof walls and floor. The laundry (and other rooms) are getting polished concrete floors this week (currently blue painted concrete in my photo) so I don’t need to put down a waterproof membrane (that’s how I read the building code). I’m planning to paint the three brick walls with Crommelin water based brick sealer and then paint over the bricks. There’s also one fibre cement sheeted wall. So, I think that means the walls will all be water resistant as per code. However, from my reading, I think I still need to waterproof the lower 150mm of the wall to meet code. Given there’s no membrane on the floor to “extend up”, how do I do this?

Re: How do i waterproof a polished concrete and brick wall laundry?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Appleti. It's marvelous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about waterproofing a bathroom.

The addition of the shower makes this a wet-area room. Outside of the shower recess it must be waterproofed across the floor to your floor waste and then up the walls.

Perhaps you've come across information that polished concrete does not require waterproofing. If that's the case, you run into the issue where you're doing something slightly different and the walls needing the waterproofing cause an issue. You could look at sheeting that area with wet-area waterproof panels that don't require waterproofing, or you'd need to find a waterproofing system suitable for transitioning over the concrete.

The waterproofing on the walls isn't a stand-alone requirement. It's a continuation of the floor waterproofing up the walls. This is because the corner needs to be waterproofed. I suspect it would be worth enlisting the services of a professional waterproofer to do the waterproofing or at least provide some guidance.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
