Hose in laundry sink for extra cleaning power - how to do?

Hey folks

I would like to have the ability to wash stuff in the laundry sink with a handheld hose (cold water only is fine) that has some pressure. I know that there are tap assemblies that allow you to pull out a retractable hose, and that might do the job, providing it would have sufficient pressure. This sort of deal:

The potential wrinkles are that our laundry sink is quite petite, and that the current taps are mounted on the wall behind the sink:

I guess my questions are:

  • Is the pull-out spray hose the only option?
  • Would this have decent pressure? (Our general water pressure in the house is only so-so.)
  • Is there any chance of DIYing this, or job for a plumber?

All comments and advice welcome!

Re: Hose in laundry sink for extra cleaning power - how to do?

Hello @Toby1

Due to the petite nature of your laundry and the configuration of your taps, it's not advisable to install a pullout sink mixer. It would involve capping off your current fixtures and relocating them under your cabinet. A hole would then need to be drilled at the side of your sink in order to install the pullout sink mixer. However, because the water pressure coming out of the tap is not so strong, the only advantage you'll actually gain is convenience.

I suggest speaking to your local plumber and seeing if it would be possible to increase the pressure coming out of your cold taps without causing any imbalance in your current plumbing setup.

If you have any other questions you need help with, please let us know.

Hi @Toby1,

I think what you need there, is a new separate cold water line run from say where the water enters the house (after any sort of pressure reducing valve), to save any pressure loss and have a plumber run it in a minimum size of 19mm (3/4") until it gets to the underside of the bench fitting for the spray head.

I also think @EricL is on the right track here, you need to discuss this with a qualified plumber, while doing this yourself might seem easily done, if it is done wrong you could have issues with back-flow.

Cheers,

Mike T.
