Cracks in bathtub

Hi All - I have noticed these fine cracks coming up in my bath tub. These are mostly around the grip circles. While doesn’t seem like water may be going in through, however, one of the cracks is too big to ignore. Appreciate any suggestions to fix this issue.

Yeah.. I am contemplating giving it a go with Protite fiberglass resin with a flexible filling blade. Sand and paint.

I have used this product in an another bathtub in the past. Surprisingly after my second coat there were beads on the floor of the bathtub. What could have caused that?

Re: Cracks in bathtub

Hi @newbie3,

That sounds like a good idea; however, it might be tricky due to their hairline nature. It is still worthwhile though as it will help seal any cracks that could create leaks in future.

With your previous project, did you sand the first coat?

If the first coat isn’t sanded, it may create a slick surface that the second coat cannot adhere to properly, leading to beading.

In future, you'll want to lightly sand the first coat with fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 220-grit) to create a slightly rough surface for better adhesion.

Let me know what you think.

Re: Cracks in bathtub

Thanks Jacob! I don't recall having sanded after coat 1. The product mentions to use within 4-5 hrs max of it being mixed. Will have to ensure I do it on a hot day so that coat 1 dries within 4 hours leaving me some time to put on the second coat.

Re: Cracks in bathtub

Hi @DIY_newbie1,

You'd be better off mixing the product in batches to ensure the first coat can be perfectly dry before sanding.

You can use a measuring jug to ensure the correct ratio is kept.
