Can I install VJ panelling over Villaboard?

We are having to renovate our bathroom due to a cracked shower base and are tight on budget. Is it possible to instsll wet area VJ panelling on top of existing villaboard? This is to save us having to tile every wall?

Re: Can I install VJ panelling ontop of Villaboard

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @fenmilkoa. It's amazing to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about installing VJ panelling.

I apologise for the delay in my reply.

You'll find the details for wet areas on page 14 of the installation guide. Providing the Villaboard lining has been waterproofed to wet area standards, then your VJ panelling can then be installed over the top. The panel must sit on top of a 150mm skirting board.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Can I install VJ panelling over Villaboard?

Thanks so much, this helps alot  I have another question about villaboard. We don't plan to tile or use vj panelling on every wall. We were hoping to have half panelling half painted (shower will be tiled) but finding it hard to know what steps to take to paint the villaboard assumd it needs to be skimmed? ...is it possible to paint it?

Hi @fenmilkoa,

Villaboard joints are typically taped and set and then sanded smooth. Waterproofing is done on the lower 150mm in a wet area and then the sheet is painted. There's no need to skim coat Villaboard. You'll need to use an undercoat suitable for masonry and then a topcoat.
