Can I drill a pilot hole into a bathroom stud?

Can I drill a pilot hole into a bathroom stud?

I am replacing damaged villaboard in bathroom. I found the stud is Cypress F5, which is very hard to hammer a nail into. I was wondering if I can drill a small pilot hole beforehand? The villaboard will be tiled. Cheers.

Re: Can I drill a pilot hole?

Hi @charlie0123,

Yes, you can definitely drill a small pilot hole before inserting nails. Drilling a pilot hole will help make the installation process easier. Be sure to choose a drill bit that's smaller than the diameter of your nail, as this will create a guide hole without weakening the material.

When drilling, go slow and use a low-speed setting on your drill to avoid overheating the bit or snapping it, as Cypress F5 is dense and tough. It's also important to drill straight and steady, keeping the drill perpendicular to the surface to prevent the bit from wandering, which could cause it to break or create an uneven hole. Lastly, only drill as deep as necessary—just enough to guide the nail or screw is usually sufficient.

Please let me know if you have further questions.
