Should you replace painters tape between coats?

Hi DIY Mind Hive. There seems to be two schools of thought around replacing painters tape between coats so I'd like an expert opinion. Some sites indicate that if you are doing multiple coats of paint then to leave the painters tape until the second coat (assuming you are doing two coats) is touch dry. Other sites indicate the tape should be removed after the first coat is touch dry and replaced for the second coat. Thoughts? Experiences? Thanks.

Re: Painters tape - to retape or not to retape

Hello @DIYHaveaCrack

Tape technology has come a long way and some tapes have outstanding performance. A good example is Bear 24mm x 50m Washi 14 Days Masking Tape. It is a professional quality, affordable masking tape featuring a high quality ultra-flat paper backing that resist bleed-through and ensures clean, sharp lines.

When compared to ordinary masking tape this particular product can be left on for 14 days and will not leave glue residue and provides outstanding sharpness. Whereas ordinary masking tapes must be removed as soon as possible as extended application will result in warping and glue residue staying on the wall.

This is possibly why some say to remove the tape as soon as possible. There is also Frog Tape 36mm x 55m Delicate Surface Masking Tape and Scotch 24mm x 55m Delicate Surface Gentle Removal Painter's Masking Tape. These tapes offer extended use and and have features that provide sharp lines and prevents bleed through. Please make sure to read the tape cover before making your decision.

I recommend using a Pro Renovator 38mm Plastic Scraper to push the edge of the tape down for a solid seal.

Let me call on our experienced members @prettyliving, @daniknight4, @Peggers and @lifestylebymari for their recommendations.

Please make sure to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a paint mask when working on your paint project.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
