This Mediterranean inspired BBQ trolley offers a multi functional purpose. It serves as a base for cooking from our portable BBQ, PLUS it provides hidden storage space for our 3 gas bottles. To reduce costs and reuse materials, we:
1. Tiled the top with left over tiles from our ensuite reno.
2. Used a pair of black hinges that we didn’t end up needing for some faux window panels.
3. Used timber panelling that we had left over from a previous job.
In addition, we covered the ‘unfinished’ area underneath the wood storage unit using black powder coated mesh, a Northcote Pottery planter box and a climbing star jasmine plant.

Measure area and tape out design to ensure it fits the space. Work out what you need for the whole project NOW and write a list!
Procure all materials and tools needed for the project in one go so you don’t waste time once you’ve started. That includes gathering whatever you have at home and placing it all in the one spot for easy access.
Build the frame base using the treated pine posts, marine ply boards and dressed pine.
Build each end panel separately using the dressed pine and fix to the frame, finishing with the cross detail.
Build the doors separately using the dressed pine and hold them in place to ensure correct fit before fixing the hinges. Now is a good time to paint the doors in my opinion as painting around and in between elaborate hinges can be a nightmare!
Measure, cut and fix Aqua check board to the top.
Measure, cut and fix border detail using dressed pine to each side at the top.
Tile the top - leaving a day for the glue to set before grouting. We experimented with a few different lays before deciding on the traditional brick design - mainly because it involved fewer cuts.
Mix up your grout and grout the top using a foam grout float, 2 buckets and a sponge. Carefully wipe away all remnants of the grout on the tile top with water - this might take a few goes.
Prep the nail holes with spak filla and fill any gaps around the timber using no more gaps. Paint the entire unit with 2 coats of 1 step prep (primer, sealer and undercoat).
Paint the entire unit with 2 coats of Snowy Mountain Half (Semi Gloss).
What a sensational project @kendallmac! I love the overall aesthetic and the tiled top. I was only just mentioning the other day that I'd be keen to get a small BBQ and do some alfresco cooking, and you're project would make a neat base for it.
Many thanks for sharing and I can't wait to see what project you tackle next.
Well done.
Mitchell
Thanks Mitchell 🙏
What started out as a simple butchers block trolley design quickly steamrolled into something far more evolved 😆
Thankfully, we’re in it for the long haul and are happy with how it’s turned out (particularly the benefit of hiding our gas bottles).
Good luck with your own design 👍👍
