How to replace deadbolt lock?

Can I remove current lock and install deadlock instead? This is external door and I don’t mind if there are no handles. I would like to improve security in our house.

Re: Deadbolt Lock

Hi @Nanne,

Thank you for your question about installing a deadbolt in place of a standard entrance handle.

It's possible, but you will likely need to modify the holes in the door to accommodate the new deadbolt and the likelihood of locking yourself out of the house is far greater than with an entrance set.

The Lockwood Stainless Steel Paradigm 005 Double Cylinder Round Deadbolt uses a 54mm hole for the lock whereas standard door handles usually use between 20-25mm holes, so I'd be surprised if it could swap out without any modification. You can check this by removing the existing handle and measuring the diameter of the hole through the door as well as the setback, which is the distance from the face of the door to the centre of the hole through the door.

It is certainly possible to increase the size of the hole to accommodate the new lock, however, there are a few steps required to ensure a smooth install.

You will need a drill, a 54mm holesaw and two thin scrap pieces of timber that are at least 100mm x 100mm.

You can attach the piece of scrap timber to the door, with some screws, such as those provided with the deadbolt, using the instructions to guide your hole placement. This piece of timber is necessary because a hole saw has a drill bit in the centre that needs to be held in place to allow the saw on the outside to begin cutting.

Once you have drilled halfway through the door, you will need to stop and repeat the process on the other side of the door to avoid blowing out the opposite side of the door.

Once this hole is drilled, you can install the deadbolt following the supplied instructions.

If you are not confident with this install, you might like to contact a locksmith or carpenter to assist.

Let me know what you think and if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
