How to repair a hole in the ceiling from old downlights?

Hi I have a kitchen ceiling made of plasterboard where someone has previously installed downlights which are slightly smaller than the original hole leaving a slight gap which I'd like to fill. I don't have a picture, but the hole is around 3-4cm long and 1 cm wide at most. As it's next to the lights, I'd rather avoid putting a backing board up there in case I hit a wire. Instead, could I use some mesh tape and jointing/topping compound to plug the gap, then sand flush and repaint? I'm repainting the ceiling soon so happy to do this all at once. Thanks

Re: How to repair a gap in the ceiling

Hi @nila,

That approach does sound like it could work, especially given the small size of the gap and your plan to repaint the ceiling soon. Using mesh tape and filler should allow you to fill and feather out the area nicely. Just make sure to apply a few thin layers and sand in between for a smooth finish.

That said, an image would really help us better understand the exact issue and offer the most effective solution—particularly since it's so close to electrical fittings. If you're able to upload a photo, we can provide more specific advice tailored to your ceiling's condition.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to repair a gap in the ceiling

Thanks Mitchell - I haven't got access atm but will post some photos when I do.

I have some Polyfilla Interior Powder (https://www.bunnings.com.au/poly-2kg-poly-powder-interior_p1715260) can I use this as the base coat with the tape? Or do I need something like Gyprock Rapid Set (https://www.bunnings.com.au/csr-gyprock-2kg-rapid-patch_p0730094) for the ceiling?

I have some Gyprock topping compound I can use for the top layer (https://www.bunnings.com.au/gyprock-csr-20kg-jointmaster-topping-compound_p0730841).

Thanks for the help!

The Polyfilla is fine to use @nila.
