How to get a paint sample from a masonry wall

Hi folks

Recently moved into an apartment that had been freshly painted. Sadly no paint sample left and all the walls are brick so I can’t scrape enough off to get a pot made up. Apparently need a clean 5c stamp size for them to colour match.

Any suggestions / tips appreciated.

thanks!

Hi @toby8

Why dont you take the  free hand out colour paint  samples to the wall and match that way,

If not a perfect match you can at least say sample  no34 but just a  touch lighter.

Re: How to get a paint sample from a masonry wall

Thanks for suggestion. Am a little dubious re how close it would be. I took an imperfect sample to bunnings (from last apartment I was in) and it was significantly off. Hoping for a more accurate result if at all possible. 🤷

The painter has done one coat in a hurry and any contact with wall and it reveals the colour beneath…so suspect I will be having to do a lot of touch ups 😣.

Hi @toby8

Simple way as  grab 4 L of  paint and you know exactly  what it is after the  wall re painted

Matching paints is more of an art form than science as  you might know your paint tint colour but as it wethers it will change

Good Evening @toby8

Welcome to the Bunnings Community page  There are a load of painting tips in here to help out painters.

Two ways come to mind, Not sure if they will work but worth a try.

First way, take a photo with flash on using your phone if its a smartphone. Not sure if they will be able to pull the colour close enough from your screen display but it will narrow it by eye.

Second way

Drop into the paint section of bunnings and grab a bunch of similar colour cards that match your wall (use your pic on the ph) this will help narrow the patch paint down.

You mention your walls are brick, are all walls brick? If you have a plaster wall or even a out of the way place down low Id maybe use a stanley blade and cut a small piece out of the wall or a sliver off the wall with the knife, Come in at a shallow angle and imagine taking off an old rego sticker from the windscreen type angle.

Thanks for suggestion.

Every wall and surface is painted this one colour so I’d have to repaint the entire apartment sooooo  I’m not up for that physically or financially so will have a crack at some other approaches 😬.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @toby8. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about colour matching.

Using the free colour cards available in-store and taking a selection of them home with you is probably the best approach to matching the colour, especially if you’re dealing with a fresh paint job. You can then test the samples against the wall to find the closest match. This will give you a good idea of which shade is closest to the paint on your walls.

Alternatively, you could try contacting the agent you purchased through and ask if they can check with the seller or the painter who did the work. It’s possible they might have records of the paint used, or they could reach out to the previous owner for confirmation. I recently sold a property and was more than happy to answer some post-sale queries.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks. Yes, I’ve emailed the agent and asked if they can either put me in contact with painter they used or ask on my behalf and come pack to me.

Unfortunately once you’ve signed on the dotted line agents are pretty unlikely to be helpful. Fingers crossed they are starting new year fresh and will assist. 👍🏻

Hopefully, they can assist @toby8. Our agent had no issue passing on questions to us.

Have narrowed it down to Dulux lexicon quarter, crisp white or cotton sheets.
all look pretty close on the swatches so will get some sample pots and test in an inconspicuous spot 👍🏻
