How long do I need to wait for water based semi gloss enamel to cure before sanding?

How long do I need to wait for water based semi gloss enamel to cure before sanding?

I have recently painted door trim with water based semi gloss enamel and can see, quite obviously, that I hadn’t sanded the gap filler enough off the nail holes. How long do I need to wait before I can sand it back before re-applying the next coat, and what grit sandpaper would you recommend? Should I sand the whole door trim to ensure an even finish, or can I spot sand the nailed areas?

Would loved to have had the fund for a professional painter, but we’re now at the bottom of the barrel of the renovation budget!

Hi @Rushtov,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

You'll want to wait at least 2 hours before doing anything to your paint.

After this waiting period, use some 180-grit sandpaper to sand the paint back and smooth your patches.  A light sand of the entire surface will be beneficial but not 100% necessary. It will be fine to spot sand in this area.

Once sanded, brush away any sawdust or powder residue before proceeding to your next coat of paint.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
