Re: more info on old Qld railway tool box...

Hi @Super_D,

What a fantastic piece of history! The compartments suggest it was designed to hold specific tools or small parts securely. To learn more, consider contacting railway enthusiast groups, local museums specialising in transportation, or online forums dedicated to Australian rail history. These sources often have extensive knowledge and might provide insights into your grandfather's toolbox. Additionally, consulting railway archives or antique appraisers could help uncover more about its use and significance.

The closest matches to it I can find are from vintage fishing tackle boxes. Are there any markings on the bottom that could lead to identification?

I look forward to you finding out more about it.

Mitchell

See something interesting? Give it the thumbs up!

Hi @Super_D

There is a volunteer railway museum walking distance from me - I'm happy to show them your photos.

Cheers.

Morning @Super_D

Just returned from the museum.

The elderly gent I showed your photos to was convinced your box was made specifically to your grandfather's requirements - by him or someone he knew. It would not have been issued by Queensland Rail. He felt it was common to see as they "were very clever men back then."

As an aside - this is not nearly as pretty, but it was an anaesthetist's carry box from the 1960's for ambulance trips. Laryngoscopes, Magill forceps, Intubation sylets, Intubation tubes, drug ampoules, etc - all held in place via cut foam. Handmade - certainly not issued by the Department of Health.

It now carries my old Skil planer.

Cheers!
