Hi everyone ,
I need to repair the putty on these windows (please see pics).
I wanted to know the best putty to use and if I should undercoat the wood both before and after the putty is applied.
Regards
Chris
Hello @ChrisA
Just a friendly reminder that working with glass is dangerous, an accidental hit with a tool or when too much force is applied to the glass can cause it to break and shatter causing injury. Please make sure to wear personal protection such as appropriate clothing, gloves and goggles.
Once all of the old putty has been removed I suggest sanding the inside edge clean. Make sure the glass is secure and will not fall out accidentally. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove all the sanding dust and wipe the surface channel with Selleys Sugar Soap Wall Cleaning Wipes - 25 Pack. I then suggest having a look at this discussion - How to replace putty around timber windows? by @lisajk. You'll find recommendations on what putty to use and how long you'll need to wait for the putty to cure.
I recommend looking at Selleys 450g Linseed Oil Special Putty in combination with UNi-PRO 38mm Real Good Putty Knife. My best advice is to practice on one side first to get yourself familiar with the putty knife. The angled flat section at the front will help you create a flat uniform surface. Please remember to keep a steady hand.
