painting a metal (gal) rainwater tank

I was wondering if anyone knows what product to use to paint the outside of my galvanised iron water tank. It’s got a few small areas of rust so I don’t know whether I can take care of that at the same time. You advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: painting a metal (gal) rainwater tank

Hello @HillBilly

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about painting your galvanized water tank.

I propose using the White Knight Rust Guard painting system. This is a complete and compatible paint system for steel, it also includes a rust converter and an etching primer. The general steps will be to wash the tank with water and detergent along with a bristle brush. Once the surface is clean and free of debris start with the rust converter and treating all the rust spots of the tank. Make sure to follow the application instructions of the rust converter. This is then followed by the White Knight Rust Guard Grey Quick Dry True Bite Primer Paint. Once the primer cures the last step will be the topcoat which is the White Knight 1L Machinery Grey Gloss Rust Guard Epoxy Enamel Paint it is available in your choice of colour and finish.

Please make sure to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a paint rated mask when working on your project.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
