Hi there
first time home owner with a huge Reno project - we laid grass on one section of our large backyard and hoped to slab the far right with a firepit and besser block built in seating.
the problem is access. We live on a very sloped block with limited access and have been told it will be near impossible to get concrete into the space.
we live in an area where weeds grow rampantly and I’d love some advice about how to make this space beautiful but cost effective with a firepit and some form of seating.
Thank you!

It’s quite common for concrete to be pumped from the road using extension pipes down the side of the property, so it might still be possible to pour a slab, depending on the layout of your block. Do you have any side access at all, or is the only way through the house? If a pump isn’t an option, getting materials into the backyard might be a challenge, as carrying concrete or besser blocks through the home one by one could be difficult.
An alternative to a concrete slab is compacting the area with road base, which can provide a stable foundation for a firepit area without the need for a poured surface. You could then build your seating using besser blocks, but again, access might make this tricky if you have to carry them through the house.
A more manageable option might be creating seating with a timber frame and decking. Timber is lighter and easier to transport than besser blocks, and a deck-style platform could elevate the space while providing a solid, level base. Composite decking or treated pine could work well, and you could even incorporate built-in bench seating.
For weed control, consider laying down weedmat beneath a gravel or decorative stone surface. This will help suppress weeds while keeping the space low-maintenance. If you’d like a softer look, groundcovers like native violets or creeping thyme can add greenery without requiring much upkeep.
