How to fix blotchy oil coating on new Pine deck?
Hey guys
Made a new pine decking and put my first coat of decking oil
2 spots are a bit blotchy
Should I sand those back a bit before 2nd cost or just leave it ?
Thanks

Re: does this look blotchy to you
Hi @PatDIY_Dad,
It looks a bit blotchy to me, but it's nothing that can't be fixed. The oil may have pooled a little bit in these areas making the coat much thicker than in other areas.
Give it a light sand, wipe away the sawdust and apply your second coat aiming for as even coverage as possible. After the second coat, it'll be fine.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: does this look blotchy to you
Thanks I did this already and it looks fine now
Looks it's not all one shade of oil but looks natural
Got another issue though. I can't seem to reach all the gaps down the bottom
The decking applicator brush says it's designed to reach down the gaps but it only touches the top parts of the gaps
I have also tried with a paint brush but the gaps are 3-4mm wide and it cannot reach the bottom parts of the gaps and paint the bottom of the boards

Re: does this look blotchy to you
Hi @PatDIY_Dad,
As the main purpose of the oil is to prevent water from seeping into the timber, it shouldn't matter so much if you can't get the entire side of the boards as water won't be able to sit on them in the same way it can on the top of the board.
If you wanted to make sure you get the full side of the decking board, you could pull them up and coat the sides, or you could use craft brushes as they are often smaller in size.
Let me know what you think.
