How to paint RHS Steel for patio fence?

Hi all! We have just had a fence installed using “RHS” steel as noted on our invoice.  When googled I found this STEEL  and I think it’s the same!

We are wanting to now paint it black to finish it off. After chatting to a Bunnings staff member he recommended using Dulux Precision All Metal Primer and the Dulux Weathershield in Night Sky.

We have just cleaned and scrubbed down the surface… are we good to go with the primer? Just want to make sure we are on the right track.

Re: How to paint RHS Steel for patio fence?

Hi @Liv95,

Thank you for your question about painting RHS steel.

Just for some information if you were wondering, RHS means "rectangular hollow section" and it refers to the shape and hollow nature of the steel.

Pre-painted RHS, as you have, is usually good to go with a good scrub, but regular unpainted RHS often has an oily coating from the production process.

I'm fairly confident looking at your photos that you're good to go, but if you want to make certain, you should give them a scrub with CLR Grease & Oil Remover then wipe it down with warm soapy water before painting. Pay close attention to the welds when scrubbing as they are the most likely place for contaminants.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
