How to build decking with some natural grass patches?

Hi experts,

I've a small backyard 5m by 10m, currently with natural grass. I am hoping to build a decking as large as I can go and without multiple levels but need to leave some grass patch for my dog to use for the toilet. I am thinking of making a deck of 5m by 8.2m leaving 900mm garden bed on each side and grow natural grass in them. But not sure if the grass will grow in such a small patch or not. Any suggestions on the design that will meet my requirements and the grass varieties are highly appreciated. Also appreciate some pictures if anyone has built something similar. Lastly, does the composite decking get unbearably hot in Sydney weather?

Thanks folks.

Re: Decking with some natural grass patch

Hi @RS,

Provided the areas get adequate sunlight and have reasonable soil, I don't see why you couldn't grow grass in those areas. However, you need to bear in mind that no grass likes extremely high levels of nitrogen present in acidic dog urine. So, your small patches of grass might die off quite quickly given they'll be constantly urinated on with no time to recover. You might like to consider laying Tuff Turf 3.75 x 1m K9 Synthetic Turf in these areas. I understand it will take some time to train your dog to use these areas instead of natural grasses, especially if they are a bit fussy. But, it is quite realistic and has an anti-bacterial backing. It can also be cleaned with general-purpose mild detergents and any odours can be controlled with Tuff Turf 500ml Synthetic Grass Deodoriser.

Testing has been done on composite decking, and the results are very similar to timber decking. However, I'd recommend going for a lighter shade rather than a dark colour, as dark colours tend to absorb heat more readily.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you. Appreciate your feedback. I'll consider the turf option.

You might like to pick up a square of a cheaper variety and test the waters to see if your pup is interested, @RS.
