How to add a gate to a backyard fence?
Hi all,
I was wondering if I could get some advice for installing a back gate into my fence. I don't have a lot of experience as a builder but do have access to my father's tools. Could someone possibly step by step me through the process? Is it doable for a novice like me?
Cheers

Re: How to add a gate to a backyard fence?
Hello @JonnyH
I propose adding another timber post around 900mm away from post where you'll be locating the gate. Once you've positioned and anchored the post in place make sure that the rails are properly screwed into the new post. Now cut the fence section between the two posts, this section will need to be modified and reinforced to serve as the gate for your fence. I've placed some images below to give you a general idea of what you'll need to do to create that gate on your fence. The goal is to create the gate in such a way that from the outside it can't be seen immediately unless you come close to it.
Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to add a gate to a backyard fence?
Good morning @JonnyH
We had a two rail fence and the top and bottom rails were left insitue, the gate was an axtra frame on the inside for the palings. You have three rails 😕 which adds some complexity.
I would go with @EricL 's layout. It will support the fence as well as give you years of use. It shouldnt be hard to do as you can dig the hole first, attach the post to the existing fence and then concrete it in. I also like the idea of hanging the gate on that new more solid post

Re: How to add a gate to a backyard fence?
Hi @JonnyH
@EricL has provided an excellent 3D render of what the gate will look like. Just bear in mind, the despite access to all the tools gates are not an easy DIY project. It can be made much easier of you start with one of these adjustable metal gate frames that you fix timbers to. But again this is challenging as you need to pilot hole in exactly the right spot through the pickets and then use self-drilling metal screws.
At the risk of deterring your spirits, opening alignment, fixing hinges, pickets and latch are all medium level DIY tasks. the best way to learn is not to do it by yourself but do it with someone who knows what they are doing and learn from them. Perhaps your Dad can help?
