How can i fix this rusty roof panel?

Hi Bunnings community,

I was inspecting a leak from the gutter when I noticed the roof has a flat sheet panel that's fairly worn out and needs fixing.

Could I get some advice how this can be repaired and what materials I'll need for the job?

Should the flat rusty panel have terracotta tiles on top?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Re: How can i fix this rusty roof panel?

Hi @seldy,

To address the problem, the sheeting will need to be removed, which involves lifting the first row of tiles and taking out the nail fixings. It appears to be a galvanised steel sheet, and you will need to install a new piece in its place. Additionally, there's some softer lead flashing present, and it would be ideal to sort that out simultaneously. The area looks a bit messy, with multiple attempts to weatherproof it, which can complicate things.

Establishing the run angles is important to ensure that water flowing down the tiles does not pool over this area. Typically, tiles are used on sloped areas, so they may not be the best option for this surface as it doesn't have much angle. If you were to add tiles here, rain might be blown back up them, leading to leaks. If the sheeting is installed correctly and sealed properly, it should work sufficiently. There are a variety of flashing tapes that can help seal your new galvanised sheeting.

This repair will require you to spend a significant amount of time on the roof and ladder. Due to the potential risks, it would be worth considering enlisting the help of a professional. If you are going to attempt the project yourself here's a helpful guide: How to use ladders safely.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Re: How can i fix this rusty roof panel?

Hi Mitchell,

Appreciate your response and your guidance.

After reviewing your instructions I've decided to call a roofing specialist. I don't have the right ladders for the job and feel that I may not be able to ensure the water doesn't get into the home.

Thank you

Seldy
