water damage cornice

water damage from torrential rain couple of years ago. Sick of looking at it. It's never happened in the 40 years we've been here. Should I try to clean it then wait to see in next downfall if it happens again. Had insulation renewed lately and couple of broken tiles replaced but that is almost a constant living near a golf course.  Was thinking of getting an insurance assessor to look as it's hard to find an honest roofer.

Re: water damage cornice

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @TCW. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about water-damaged cornice.

Provided you've had the leak addressed then I'd give the area a quick clean down with Sugar Soap and wipe with fresh water to remove it. You can then prime the area with a stain blocker such as Zinsser 1L White Bulls Eye Primer Undercoat Sealer And Stain Blocker and then paint over. You'll have the area looking like new in a few hours. If you don't prime with the stain blocker, that water stain will likely show through your paint.

Since you've mentioned ongoing roof tile issues, it would be worth making sure there are no remaining leaks before repairing the cornice. If you’re unsure, you might like to reach out to a local community group for recommendations on a reliable roofing specialist in your area.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
