How to modernise timber staircase?

I want to modernise my staircase and not sure what to do. It is a maple timber staircase

If you  really  want modern  Put in an air lift elevator  Approx  cost  $45K

Alternatly See the wasted  space beween the stairs and the wall?

Expand the treads of the stairs all the way to the wall to make it a  more grand opening and inviting to the stairs above.

One quick way to give your stairs a fresh new look is to give it a new colour scheme. I propose grey for the handrail, keep the bannisters white and perhaps a darker grey for the steps. There are so many ways to colour your steps, I suggest visiting your local store and getting a brochure and looking at the proposed colour combinations.
