How to replace only the door latch jamb/frame on a front door

Hi,

I am planning to replace the current door locks of our front door, particularly using smart locks. However once I remove the locks that currently installed, it will leave a large opening on the jamb. I am keen to get some inputs if I can replace only this side of the jamb and save the keep the rest of the frame. One side of the door trim will also have to be replaced.

For the opening left by the current door locks, will use a builders bog as recommended from other posts.

Hi @francis02,

Yes, you can replace just the latch side of the jamb if needed. This approach provides fresh timber for installing the new lock hardware, ensuring a secure and durable fit, especially if the new lock is to be installed in the same location as the old one.

Alternatively, if replacing the jamb isn’t necessary for the new lock’s installation, you can fill the existing opening with Builder's Bog, as you’ve mentioned. This method works well for smaller gaps or if the new hardware will be positioned in a different area, reducing strain on the repaired section.

If you choose to replace the latch side of the jamb, carefully remove the existing trim and jamb, cut a new timber piece to size, and secure it in place while ensuring proper alignment with the rest of the frame. Afterward, you can reattach or replace the trim as required.

Both options are viable depending on the condition of your frame and the placement of the new lock.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for your prompt response. Yes the new lock will be installed on the same position, can you recommend which jamb I need to order?
Was also thinking to just cut the portion where the door mortise currently sits and cut to size a wood to replace just that area

Hi @francis02,

You'll find door jambs on the Bunnings website. You'll need to measure your dimensions and choose the appropriate size.

You could try to graft in a new piece of timber. However, it wouldn't be as strong as a solid piece, and this raises security concerns if someone were to try and break in by kicking the door.

Have you checked to see whether the new components can be installed in the same position as the old ones? If the new one is larger in size, you might need to remove more timber and install it into the existing jamb.
