How to paint board and batten walls?

IMG_3884.jpeg

Hello, I’m wondering what paint I should use to paint my daughter’s bedroom. I have added board and batten to the walls and wish to paint the whole room, ceiling and laminate wardrobes in the same colour. The existing trim is painted in an oil based paint. I already have 3/4 of a tin of British paints water based enamel in my chosen colour. Can I use that on everything or would I be better to get something else for the walls? Also, what primer would be best to even out texture (particularly the areas I’ve caulked and wood filled)?

Many thanks!

Re: How to paint board and batten walls?

Hello @Georgiejonsson

Thanks for sharing your question about how to paint your board and batten walls. In order for you to use your water-based British paints on the entire area it will be necessary to prime the oil-based topcoat of your trim with an oil-based primer. The high gloss finish of the oil-based topcoat of the trim must be sanded off so that the oil-based primer can latch onto the surface of the trim. Once the primer has fully cured you can use a water-based topcoat over the trim.

I suggest doing a complete inspection of the walls and trim in regards to the filling and caulking. Sand down any areas where the filler is not flat, use a sharp scraper to trim any excess caulking. By doing this prep work before painting you'll get a much better finish when you start painting.
