How to paint a cabinet?

What paint could I use to paint this cabinet white or make it look a lighter brown (like the colour of the floor)?

Re: How to paint a cabinet?

Good afternoon @achandra100

I am actually looking forward to what you do with the unit. I am completly amazed at peoples projects for upcycling an older piece of furniture in here.

I'd probarly start with painting an undercoat of white and then go from there.

Ive listed three projects, make that four that popped up when I had a search (couldnt find the actuall one I was after sadly) but these were impressive!

Upcycled Pine bookcase

Upcycled bedside drawers

Upcycled old drawers to farmhouse cabinet

Upcycled chest of drawers with stencilled paintwork

I have resolved to give some old pieces a go at bringing them back from their old style instead of purchasing something new.

Hoping you will post some pics when you are done

Re: How to paint a cabinet?

Hello @achandra100

Thank you for sharing your question about how to paint your cabinet. What a fantastic opportunity to stretch your upcycling skills! Your floor looks very close to a natural finish. I suggest sanding down the furniture and removing the paint that's currently on it. You'll then be able to see the type of timber you're dealing with. I suggest using an electric sander to expedite the sanding process.

If it is dark coloured, it might be possible whitewashing it with Liming White. But if it is light coloured, I propose using Cabothane Clear water-based timber varnish.
