I’ve just bought my first home and am finally able to drill into the walls and properly decorate yay! But I have honestly no idea how to do that, because it’s never been an option before
I would love to put a shelf around the top of one wall of a bedroom, with a clothes rail underneath to create an open wardrobe vibe.
Something like this:
Would it be possible or is it better/easier to just install a self and separate clothes rail under it, this is one I found from ikea
Ideally I would like both the clothes rail and the shelf to go the entire length of room, about 3m.
Any advice would be much appreciated, especially in regards to what I need to attach things to the wall, or what I need to find out before I start to try to do that.
thank you!!
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @alterily. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about hanging shelves.
To create a shelf and clothes rail along one wall, here's how you can securely attach items to the wall, whether it's plasterboard or masonry.
For plasterboard walls, the strongest option is to screw directly into the timber studs behind the plasterboard. These studs are usually spaced 450 or 600mm apart. Use a stud finder to locate them accurately—here's a helpful guide on How to use a stud finder. If there isn’t a stud in the required fixing location, you can use plasterboard fixings, but be sure to check their weight capacity as they are less sturdy than attaching directly to studs.
For masonry walls, you can attach brackets almost anywhere. Drill holes into the wall using a hammer drill with a masonry drill bit. Once the holes are made, insert plastic wall plugs and secure your brackets using standard screws. This method is strong and can support heavier loads, making it ideal for a shelf and clothes rail.
Check out this guide on How to hang just about anything for more information.
For a 3m-long shelf and clothes rail, you'll need sturdy brackets and support at regular intervals to prevent sagging. If you want a seamless look, you could attach both the shelf and rail to the same brackets. Alternatively, you can install a separate shelf and rail system. We have plenty of storage solutions to choose from. You might like to check out the Flexi Storage planner that will help you decide on the layout and let you know exactly what you'll need.
Before you begin, measure and plan carefully, ensuring your shelf and rail heights suit your space.
