How to extend a kitchen island?

Good afternoon,

I'm looking at extending my kitchen island (Pictures are attached).

I wish to knock down the south end panelling (So the island is just flat without any pieces sticking up)

Easy to explain when looking at the south end photo (You'll see the plant at the top left hand side)

- Wish to extend the south end by approximately 800 mm.

- Wish to extend the left hand side by approximately 300 mm.

- Wish to extend the right hand side by 150 mm

- Wish to extend the top end by 400 mm.

- Wish to have a larger sink space. We like the two separate ones and a place to put the dishes when drying. (So a similar set up, just wider/taller/deeper sinks).

After alternative to completely making the whole lot from brand new (May still have to be the way but want to see other options). I'm not looking for cheap, I'm looking for good value.

Lastly, haven't considered/factored into the bench tops... But they are approximately 20 mm thick... and would look at similar material/thickness, perhaps in a different colour (Dark grey, to match walls).

Photos attached. Cheers

Re: How to extend a kitchen island?

Hello @Andrew_s

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about extending your island.

The extension of your island can be achieved by installing cabinetry to the size you're after. For example, you want one side to be extended by 800mm, the existing tall end panels will need to removed and the cabinet placed next to your dishwasher. The cabinet will then need to be integrated into the island by putting base end panels and a backend panel that matches the existing set. If you are linking a new benchtop to the existing benchtop, it will technically need an overhang not only on the front but at its side as well.

The sequence would be that the 800 base cabinet is installed next to the dishwasher followed by a base end panel on both sides of the cabinet which is conservatively 18mm thick. Then a back panel is placed at the back of the cabinet. When the new benchtop is placed on top it will need to take into account the base end panels which is 36mm thick but the overhang as well which conservatively is 30mm. So, the total length of the benchtop will be 866mm. Please make sure to double check these measurements before actual installation occurs.

The same thing will happen on the other side of the island. A 400mm base cabinet will need to be installed to support the benchtop. However, if you are after a totally new setup, I suggest visiting your local store with your measurements and speaking to the in-store kitchen specialist and asking for a quote for your new full-length island with double bowl drainer sink.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
