Can I stain laminate cabinets?

Hi, I am wondering if you can put a darker stain on laminate kitchen cabinets. The cabinets are a wood grain beech colour, but I would like them to look more like a silky oak. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about laminated kitchen cabinets.

Laminated surfaces can't be stained or painted with ordinary paint. The only way to paint laminated surfaces is to use specially designed paint systems such as the Dulux Renovation Range or the White Knight Tile and Laminate paint. These paint systems were made to go onto laminated surfaces including benchtops. You could paint the doors close to the shade of silky oak, but you won't get the grained wood effect as the paint systems only do solid colour.

The only other method to get the silky oak finish is to change your laminated doors to real timber doors.
