What the heck is growing on in my lawn?

Im attempting to spruce up the lawn so I've been weeding & raking up anything that isn't lawn. Does anyone know what this skinny vine like stuff is!? Is it part of the lawn? Should i rip it all out? Wont be much lawn left if i do! Any help appreciated 🙏

Re: What the heck is growing on in my lawn?

Hello @ChiefKeith

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your lawn.

It looks like you have couch grass runners (stolons) in your lawn. Couch grass spreads through these creeping runners, which help it establish and recover from damage. If you pull them all out, you'll be removing a big part of your lawn, and it may struggle to grow back.

If your goal is to revive the lawn, instead of ripping these out, try mowing low to encourage new growth and spreading. You can also give it a good feed with a nitrogen-rich lawn fertilizer (like Scotts Lawn Builder All Purpose or Seasol Lawn Fertilizer from Bunnings) to boost green growth. Light topdressing with sand or fine soil can also help thicken it up.

However, if the runners are completely dead and not greening up, they won’t recover, and you might need to rake them out and oversow with a compatible lawn seed to fill in gaps. If you're dealing with compacted soil, aerating with a garden fork can also help encourage healthy regrowth. Let me know how it goes!

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
