Can someone please tell me what is wrong with my Hydrangea? It was beautiful and healthy two week ago and now looks like it’s in its last legs
Hello @emmawigg
Your hydrangea looks like it's having a tough time, but don't worry—there are a few possible reasons for this, and most can be fixed with a little care. One common issue is spider mites, especially in warm, dry weather. If you notice tiny webs or speckling on the leaves, these little pests might be the culprit. A good hose down or using Yates 200ml Nature's Way Vegie And Herb Concentrate from Bunnings can help get rid of them.
Another possibility is a nutrient deficiency, particularly a lack of nitrogen or iron, which can cause the leaves to turn pale and dull. If you haven't fed your hydrangea recently, giving it a boost with some Garden Basics 2L Seaweed Liquid Concentrate or Scotts Osmocote 500g Roses, Gardenias, Azaleas And Camellias Controlled Release Fertiliser might make a difference.
Watering is also something to check. Too much or too little water can cause stress, so if the soil feels dry, a deep watering should help. On the other hand, if it’s staying too wet, improving drainage may be necessary.
If your hydrangea has been in full sun, it could be suffering from sunburn or heat stress, as they prefer morning sun and afternoon shade. If possible, moving it to a shadier spot might help it recover. Fungal issues, like powdery mildew, could also be causing trouble, especially if the leaves have a dusty or greyish coating. This happens more in humid conditions with poor airflow, but a fungicide, like Yates Fungus Gun, can help if you think that’s the problem.
