How to revive overwatered Buffalo turf?

Hi,

I am after suggestions on how to bring  lawn back from this?
the buffalo turf was laid roughly 2 months ago and overwatered.
I have aerated and put a slow-release fertiliser on but it only appears to be getting worse.

Re: overwatered turf

Hello @Reef

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your lawn.

It sounds like your buffalo lawn has been struggling with overwatering, which can lead to shallow roots, compacted soil, and even fungal issues. Since you’ve already aerated and applied slow-release fertiliser, the next step is to focus on improving drainage and encouraging stronger root growth.

If the soil is still holding too much moisture, try cutting back on watering for a while to let it dry out a bit. Buffalo grass prefers deep, infrequent watering rather than frequent, light watering. If you haven’t already, check for any signs of fungal disease, yellowing, thinning patches, or a black, mushy base could indicate an issue. Applying a fungicide from Bunnings, like Yates Mancozeb Plus, might help if disease is a factor. If the lawn is still struggling after a few weeks, topdressing lightly with Scotts Lawn Builder 25L Organic Lawn Soil Topdress & Underlay can help improve soil structure and encourage new growth.

I also suggest having a look at this guide - How to detect lawn problems by @Adam_W.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
