Hi, I am trying to improve the look and health of my lawn. There are several brown patches that I am unsure of the cause of. What would be the best way to get grass back into these areas? Are there any specific lawn seeds that you would recommend? The soil is mainly clay. The previous owners had not been at the property for over a year so there had not been much maintenance. There is also an area that previously had a hot tub or trampoline that I am keen to improve the look of. Thank you in advance.
Hi @TomS,
It looks like you're dealing with some compacted soil, which is likely contributing to the brown patches in your lawn. I'd recommend starting by aerating the affected areas to improve water and nutrient absorption. After aerating, add a layer of top-dressing soil to help fill in the gaps and provide the grass with better growing conditions. You should also check the rest of the lawn for compacted areas – it could be beneficial to aerate the entire lawn.
For areas with clay soil, adding Gypsum can help break down the compacted soil and improve its structure, which in turn will benefit your grass. This is particularly useful for clay-based soil, as Gypsum helps improve drainage and overall soil health.
To repair the patchy areas, you can overseed with a lawn repair mix. Choose a seed that’s suitable for your climate and soil type. For clay soil, you might want to consider a mix specifically designed for tougher conditions or one that includes grasses like couch, which is known to do well in clay soils.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
