I have been away for two months, when I left the fig tree was looking so good, but now is yellowing and not looking so good. It has been very hot and a lot of rain, potentially also over watered. Any help please?
Hello @PhilSS
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your fig tree.
Your fig tree is showing signs of stress, likely due to the combination of hot weather and excessive rain while you were away. Overwatering can cause yellowing leaves, root stress, and fungal issues, which seem to be affecting your plant. The first thing to check is the soil drainage—if the potting mix is still very wet, let it dry out before watering again, as figs dislike constantly damp roots. Trim off any yellowing or badly damaged leaves to encourage new growth and improve air circulation. If the soil has a foul smell or feels too mushy, root rot could be a concern, and repotting into fresh, well-draining soil may be necessary.
The brown patches on the leaves suggest a possible fungal infection, such as fig rust, which thrives in humid conditions. Treating the plant with a copper-based fungicide, like Yates Liquid Copper from Bunnings, can help manage the issue. Ensuring good airflow around the plant by keeping it in a well-ventilated area will also help prevent fungal problems from worsening. Adjust your watering routine by only watering when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, and if heavy rain continues, consider moving the pot to a more sheltered location.
Once the plant has stabilized, giving it a light feed with a balanced fertilizer, such as a slow-release fruit tree fertilizer or liquid seaweed solution, will support its recovery. Keep an eye out for any pests that may have taken advantage of the plant’s weakened state. With some care, your fig tree should bounce back and regain its health.
