This self-watering vertical garden allows you to grow more in a compact space and is also a fantastic aesthetic screening solution.

The project

I have two big dogs so I didn't want to reduce the space in our backyard. One dog also likes to dig, so garden beds would only be destroyed. My solution was to build these vertical gardens along the fence-line.

I used 200 x 25mm rough sawn treated pine in the build and coated the timber with decking oil. I screwed the boxes to the uprights and set them at an angle, and then ran 13mm poly pipe along the top and centre beams and connected mist sprays for the in-built watering system. I just have to turn on a tap and my whole garden is watered by a rainwater tank.
