This D.I.Y. Tasmanian Oak chopping board can be made in about an hour and makes a terrific gift for friends and family.
I cut 19mm thick Tasmanian Oak into 30mm strips on the table saw. Turned these strips on their side so that the board will have a thickness of 30mm. Arranged the strips to make a width of 300mm, which is the maximum width of my planer. I then glued and clamped these pieces tight for 24 hours.
Ran it through the planer/thicknesser to achieve a smooth and even surface. Then gave it a sand with 120-grit and 240-grit sandpaper. Rounded over the edges with a router and gave it another sand over the sides with 240-grit sandpaper. After that, I sanded with 400-grit sandpaper all over.
Screwed on the feet and finished with a food-grade wax.
It didn't take long to make. Around one hour to make and 24 hours for the glue to set.
Impress friends and family at your next gathering with a D.I.Y. cheese board. This step-by-step guide to making a cheese board shows you how to make a two-tone timber board perfect for an antipasto platter.
