This bookshelf was carefully rounded and sanded to be safe and pleasant for children to touch.
I made this Montessori-inspired bookshelf for my daughter using plywood.
I started with a sketch:
Each shelf is exactly the same, replicated three times.
I routered and sanded down the edges to soften the whole bookcase and make it kid-friendly.
I've always appreciated the functionality and aesthetics of the Montessori style. I think it gives kids a chance to she how things actually work, with joints and edges and all the natural patterns.
In saying that, building it is less forgiving, which was a lesson in patience and trusting the process!
My daughter seems to like crawling up to it and pulling down books so I can't complain!
