This D.I.Y. entertainment unit uses laminated Pine panels to provide a TV mount and display shelves.
I wanted a free-standing TV cabinet that I could mount my TV and soundbar on and also use as a bit of storage. It's hard to build a feature wall when you're renting!
I couldn't find anything pre-made so I sketched up what I thought would work and went down to Bunnings to see if I could find something that I could use to make it myself. In the end I settled on two 2100mm x 900mm x 30mm FJ Pine laminated panels.
The staff there were very accommodating and did all the cuts that I had mapped out. All I had to do was take the cut panels home and screw them together. It was basically like a flat pack.
The rear panel is cut into three fitted pieces that sit "inside" the floating shelves to support the weight of the shelves but give the appearance of being one continuous panel.
To suit my other furniture I used a black stain and varnish in one. I didn't even sand the panels before I varnished them – between the the coats I gave them a quick hand sand with 240-grit paper. I'm very happy with the finish I achieved.
I countersunk M6 x 65mm coach screws for "exposed" joins – and because it was the only join that suited my skill level.
I ran two 70mm x 45mm Pine struts up the back to hold everything together, for mounting the rear panel and also for supporting the TV bracket and soundbar shelf.
Here are the cut templates that I did for the two panels. I specifically wanted the unit to be 400mm deep. You could simplify it a bit and make it 450mm deep and not have the 100mm leftovers (but then you would need more wood for the underneath base and shelf).
The Bunnings staff were more than happy to cut all the panels up to my exact specs. It was all cut and loaded into my car in less than 10 minutes.
Everything I used to build this was in stock at my local Bunnings, including the LED Lights and TV mount bracket. I went in there to get it all on Saturday morning and by Sunday afternoon it was all finished and in my lounge.
I've also got half of one of the sheets left over to make a table that will fit snug next to my kitchen island bench to add a some extra table room for dining.
