Installing frosted window film on doors is a simple and effective way to add privacy to your home.
We recently installed window film to the front doors of our new home. We had great results installing mirrored window film at our last place a couple of years ago, but this time we wanted privacy for both day and night so we went with the Pillar Products Plain Frost window film.
Materials used (everything from Bunnings):
• Glass cleaner
• Window microfibre cloth
• Pillar Products “plain frost” window film
• Tape measure
• Scissors (to cut film to size)
• Window film solution
• Applicator set (scraper and knife)
• Ruler.
Clean windows thoroughly.
Measure width and length of the window.
Cut your window film. Make sure it's a couple of centimetres larger than the window.
Spray window film solution on the window.
Peel a little backing off starting from the top end of the film.
Place film onto the window, starting at the top.
Smooth out the film using the window film applicator (scraper). Peel the rest of the backing off as you work your way down.
Using a ruler as a straight edge guide, cut the excess film with a blade/knife. Leave a couple of millimetres gap between the edge of the film and the window frame to allow the window film solution to run out.
Use the window film applicator again to scrape any excess solution out towards the edges.
Dab a cloth along the edges to soak up all the excess solution.
This project was quite simple to do. The trick is to take your time and make sure the windows are really clean prior to applying the film. The slightest bit of dirt will make the surface rough and will often lead to an uneven finish and trapped air bubbles.
The frosted film has made a huge difference, these windows can no longer be seen through during both the day and night so we were very happy with the result.
Using window film is an affordable way to improve the privacy of any room. Check out the Bunnings guide How to frost glass for tips on installing window film.
Jess (@prettyliving) also tinted her windows using mirror-tinted window film in order to add privacy and remove sun glare.
