how to make a door to hide pipes under the laundrey sink

Hello any ideas to make a door to hide pipes under sink and stored things.

Be good to use the same varnished benchtop wood as the sink.

Re: how to make a door to hide pipes under the laundrey sink

Hi @anneme,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

You'll have to start by adding a strip of material, such as melamine or pine DAR, on the right side of the opening which I have shown in red. It should be similar to the piece on the left of the opening. This will be there for the door to close against.

You can then grab a piece of CUSTOMpine Carcass Shelving E1L White Standard Particleboard and cut it to fit the opening allowing for a 2-3mm gap on all four sides of the opening. You can then put Moroday 5m White Iron-on Melamine Edge on all four sides of the door.

Once prepared, you can hang the door from either the left or right side of the opening using full-overlay cabinet hinges such as these Hafele 105° Soft Close Full Overlay Clip On Hinge. As you are making a custom door, you will have to use this Hafele Hinge Mounting Kit to mark and drill the rebates for the hinges. Check out How To Install Cabinet Hinges for some guidance on this process.

Once the door has been hung, you can add your choice of cabinet handle.

Let me know what you think and if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Re: how to make a door to hide pipes under the laundrey sink

Hi Jacob thanks for all the advice ...so just to clarify on both sides I put those strips are they just glued on or drilled?

Also I wanted to use the same finish as the wood around the sink ...don't know the name but it's in my kitchen too and it is varnished so it's waterproofed.

I thought  Bunnings does stock it. I was wanting 2 doors so they just open up from the middle or would your recommend just one door so opening from the right?

Thanks heaps

Re: how to make a door to hide pipes under the laundrey sink

Hello @anneme

The Moroday 5m White Iron-on Melamine Edge is a cover strip that is used to cover the open ends of a melamine panel. Simply place the strip over the raw edge of the panel and place a tea towel over the strip and run your iron over the top of the tea towel. This will melt the glue on the strip and attach it to the melamine panel. The excess strips at the side can be trimmed off using a craft knife and the edge lightly sanded to give it a neat finish.

If you want a timber door, I suggest using a Specrite 1200 x 600 x 18mm Timber Multi Use Pine Panel which you'll need to cut down to size. Please make sure to measure your cabinet opening in order to get the right panel size. I recommend going to the paint department and having a look at the stain and varnish sample board and see which one is close to the finish of your benchtop. Please note that you can try to get a similar finish, but it will not be possible to get an exact match.

If you wish to have two doors, it will be necessary to attach a timber piece horizontally across the two vertical pieces you'll be needing for your door. Its purpose is to stop both doors from folding inside your cabinet. You can then use the same technique Jacob suggested to connect the hinges to the other door.

Between the two methods, using the single melamine panel would be much simpler.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
