hello. we are trying to decide for a wet-areas reno whether wet area walls for our (residential) home should be upgraded from the normal 1/4" villaboard to a more commercial-styled 3/8" villaboard.
what are people's thoughts please?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @andyss2003. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about Villaboard thickness.
1/4" or 6mm is the typical thickness of Villaboard used in residential wet areas. Unless you are changing your tiles to something much heavier and thicker than what was there previously, I can't see any reason you would increase the thickness of the board. The Villaboard installation guide shows you the maximum thickness tile you can use on each of the boards.
Unless your tile is thicker than 9mm (or weighs more than 30kg/m2) on 600mm stud centres or is thicker than 13mm (or weighs more than 40kg/m2) on 450mm stud centres, there's little reason to increase the thickness of the board. Do you know the stud centres and thickness of the tile?
Please let me know if you have any questions.
