Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @AW69. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about installing a shower base.
Shower bases need to be installed as per their instructions. You can also reference the National Construction Code for additional details. Here's the James Hardie Wet Area Installation Guide. It has plenty of great info on how stud work is to be constructed. I'll include an image below from it that shows a recessed base. The waterproofing must be added over the Villaboard right down to the recessed lip of the base.
