Hi Community,
I was trying to change my shower spindle from the traditional one wall spindle into a 1/2 turn wall spindle.
I managed to remove the turning handle, however could not get the dome shaped “cap” removed. I tried using multiple tools, and also even buying a strap wrench still didn’t work. There’s no grib at all with the cap…
Can I check if there’s an recommendation to remove the cap?
Thanks a lot!
Wilson
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @laiwilson. It's great to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about removing a tap flange.
Tapered tap flanges are notoriously hard to remove due to not being able to grip them well. Here are some previous discussions you might like to read through: Plumbing issue - unable to unscrew faucet flange by @AndrewL and Tap Bonnet dramas by @timjeffries. Our members make several great suggestions within those topics.
Sometimes the flange can be siliconed in place or have grime built up behind it, making it hard to remove. Try carefully slipping an extendable cutting blade under the flange and running it around the circumference. Remember your PPE, including cut-resistant gloves and safety glasses.
If the suggestions in the above discussions don't assist, you might need to remove the stuck flange destructively. This could involve cutting it off with a hacksaw or crushing it to give the multigrip pliers something to hold onto.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
