How to fix bathroom cabinet to a plaster wall?

Hello community. My first time fixing a bathroom cabinet on a plaster wall and unfortunately it didn't go well. The top wall plug came off (not sure if the hole was too big OR the cabinet is too heavy). I am seeking advice on:

1. How to secure it properly on a plaster wall

2. Do I need to fix the plaster wall holes

3. Recommendations on a better wall plug suited for a plaster wall  IMG_4911.jpgScreen Shot 2024-11-26 at 9.37.28 am.pngScreen Shot 2024-11-26 at 9.37.20 am.png

Re: How to fix bathroom cabinet to a plaster wall?

Hi @Chin,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

Unfortunately, these plugs are not designed for plasterboard. They are masonry plugs that are designed for use with brick, block or concrete walls.

I would strongly advise against installing a cabinet like this using plasterboard anchors. Wall-hung cabinets should be screwed into studs as the plasterboard is not structural and the potential for the plasterboard to fail and the cabinet to fall off the wall causing injury to its user is far too high.

You can use the provided screws driven into your studs which can be located with a stud finder. Check out How to use a stud finder for some guidance.

Once you have located your studs, mark them and screw the cabinet into place. You'll want the cabinet to attach to at least two studs. As studs are typically spaced 450mm apart, there should be two available.

If the cabinet is concealing the holes you've created, there's no real need to fix them up, but if you'd like to you can use some Spakfilla to fill the holes before sanding and painting to match.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
