Hello guys. By the power of you tube I repaced the inlet float valve washer but cistern is now overflowing. I think I need to adjust the float level but unsure how. Thought I'd done the job correctly but when I replaced the lid & flushed, realised it was filling too much. Utterly deflated. @ least I managed to turn water off just as it was @ the brim. Help gratefully appreciated. 😞
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Rouxster. It's marvellous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about adjusting a float valve.
It sounds like it's entirely possible that the float level needs to be adjusted. You need to move the float down to cut the water off earlier. Use the grey cross on top of the threaded section to do so. Try anti-clockwise first. I'd give it five rotations and then check to see if it cuts the water off before the top of the cistern. If not, try five more. Keep doing this process until you run out of screw and can't turn anti-clockwise any further. If that doesn't solve the issue, try the same method but turning the screw clockwise. If you once again reach the limit of the screw without ceasing the water flow, you might have installed the washer wrong.
This screw is the fine adjustment; sometimes, there is also a large adjustment which is typically the whole valve moves up and down on the cylindrical mounting shaft. If you didn't take the whole valve out of the toilet, then I wouldn't have thought that would be the issue.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
